Shawnell McFarlane
Squaxin Island
haʔɫ sləx̌il txʷəl dəgʷi (good day to you) I am Shawnell McFarlane a proud member of the Squaxin Island and Skokomish Tribes, my people are known as the people of the water and river. As a senior at Northwest Indian College, I’m pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Native Environmental Science, focusing on the intersection of Indigenous knowledge and environmental stewardship. My work spans areas like aquatic remote sensing, astrobiology, curriculum development, and community engagement, with an emphasis on ethical research and cultural preservation, all aimed at uplifting Native youth through education and mentorship.
I’m passionate about creating opportunities for young people to see themselves in science and leadership roles, blending cultural knowledge with modern innovation. Whether it’s through storytelling, hands-on activities, or mentoring, I love helping youth discover their potential while honoring their roots. I aim to inspire the next generation to carry their traditions forward while building a sustainable future for their communities.
